Experience the American Revolution

Lights of Liberty Show

Experience the American Revolution, as it happened, where it happened – through state-of-the-art technology at the Lights of Liberty Show, the first ambulatory sound and light show of its kind in the world. As you journey through Independence National Historical Park, the story is told through beautiful hand painted images that illuminate the buildings where the events actually took place over 230 years ago.

During the approximately one hour show, breathtaking five-story projections recreating actual events grace Franklin Court, the Second Bank of the U.S., Carpenters’ Hall and Independence Hall. You are guided by colonial players, and receive audio via 3-D sound headsets.

You’ll hear a moving musical score composed just for the show and performed by musicians of the Philadelphia Orchestra, plus dazzling effects produced at Skywalker Sound. The voices of Walter Cronkite, Ossie Davis, Frank Langella, and Charlton Heston, among others, tell the tale. (Whoopi Goldberg narrates the kid’s channel!) Click for complete cast list.

The story is also available in our “Children’s Channel”, geared specifically towards children ages 6 - 12. In addition, the adult version is offered in German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

"The Most Genteel Tavern in America" - John Adams

This is the spot where the likes of Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Paul Revere, George Washington, and John Adams hung out. Philadelphia has tons of history going for it and The City Tavern is a big part of the picture. The truth is the City Tavern went through some difficult times (not to mention the fire that actually destroyed the building in 1834). It was a very good restaurant back in the day (1776)

There are seven intimate dining rooms, three wine cellar rooms, and a beautiful garden for some of the best outdoor dining in the area.

They eloped, and 21-year-old Betsy was promptly “read out” of the Quaker church. Ross died in early 1776, and shortly thereafter Betsy had her fateful meeting with three patriots including George Washington, which led to sewing of famed flag. Society Hill:
Philadelphia's
America's Most Historic Square Mile

Society Hill: Philadelphia's authentic colonial area, from the Delaware River west to 8th Street the limit of settlement in 1776, but for a while the center of America.

The richest, most famous men in America lived within a few blocks of each other. Things happened here.

Society Hill continues to be a stimulating confluence of historic charm and architecture, varying scales, mixed uses, and social diversity that creates an extraordinary place to live, work, or visit

William Penn called his real estate management company the "Society of Free Traders". Very early, the high ground to the south of Dock Creek (now Dock Street) was called Society Hill and became residential. The commercial and shipping businesses tended to settle on the north side of Dock Creek.

Eventually, Spruce, Pine and Locust Streets were residential, Walnut Street had the lawyers, Chestnut Street the banks, and Market Street the stores. With the building of the Quaker meetinghouse at 4th and Arch, the Quakers tended to settle along Arch Street. As the city built westward, these patterns persisted. The more prosperous and ostentatious residents tended to live along Spruce Street, while the simpler but not necessarily poorer Quakers lived "North of Market".

Society Hill’s Dining Excitement !
Serving up a nightly feast of worldly flavors, with tastes ranging from traditional Irish or Seafood fare to contemporary French and home-style Mexican flavors. Take your taste buds on a global tour without ever leaving the neighborhood.

When Charles Peterson the architectural historian moved his own house into the deteriorated slum of Spruce Street after the Second World War, he started a revival of the area.

Mr. Peterson was famous for insisting on serious scholarship in any claims made about Colonial restoration. But he was not above a little showmanship, and knew full well that drumming the term "Society Hill" would convey an upscale tone to what was then a dimly perceived vision. He was right;

Society Hill real estate prices are now quite pricey.

Society Hill one of Philadelphia's most desirable residential neighborhoods. Historic institutions, including churches and a hospital, still exist, complementing an atmosphere of mature trees, granite block streets, and brick sidewalks. A farmer's market occupies the spot where a very old market had once stood, and reproduction "Franklin" street lamps provide for pedestrian safety without compromising historic integrity.
Today, a large plaza covers I-95 between Dock and Spruce Streets, and pedestrians have safe access to a city park and promenade along the river. The association remains active, maintaining and improving pocket parks and monitoring development in the area.
